REVIEW: Every Breath (Every Life Series #1) by Tasha Ivey

How does someone give their heart away when they don’t have all of the pieces?

Not that Makenna really wants a second chance at love anyway. She is stuck in her tragic past, secretly living every day for her deceased fiancé, while her new boyfriend, Drew, is gently nudging her into the present.

Desperate to appear normal again, she slaps on a happy face and goes through the motions of a normal, healthy relationship—but with the exception of even a single kiss. And she’s okay with pretending, but Drew needs more than she’s willing to give.

Surprisingly, it’s an innocent letter from a soldier halfway around the world that has her seeing life differently. Sawyer is at his breaking point, and his depression sucks him in deeper every day. Makenna becomes his only lifeline to home, and he’s hanging on by a very weak thread.

By helping him, Makenna learns to let go of grief before she’s left with only a ghost of the woman she once was, finally freeing her from guilt and showing her that it is possible to love again. But when she discovers that both of the men in her life are hiding something, she makes two shocking revelations.
One of them is insanely in love with her, and one of them destroyed her happy ever after.

Even though a fairytale ending does await her, is she willing to face her own demons to fight for it?

My Thoughts

In Every Breath we meet Makenna, a primary school teacher. She has been grieving for 2 years after the loss of her fiancé, and muddles through every day with a fake smile on her face and a desperate attempt to feel "normal" again. After being given an ultimatum from her best friend, she decides to give "life" a go and enters into a relationship with Drew.

Drew is the high school football coach and has had his eye on Makenna since she started working at the school. He finally asks her out and they both agree to take things slowly.
Don't get me wrong, I love being with Drew, but I'm not sure that he'll ever fully have my heart. Simply because I don't have all the pieces.

Sawyer is a solder that Makenna's second grade class has been sending letters to. After she gets a reply from him, they start to email and video chat. Makenna becomes Sawyer's lifeline to home, and Makenna finds herself looking forward to her chats with him.

Without realising it, Makenna and Sawyer begin to open up to each other about things that they haven't been able to speak about with anyone else. With the ease of communication  between them and how comfortable they feel telling each other these things, their relationship slowly becomes something more.
The fact that I've had to force myself into a relationship with Drew and now I'm falling so easily into everything with Sawyer is frightening.

Drew doesn't take the news of Makenna not wanting to be with him very well of course, but I'll let you read all about it for yourself!

Tasha Ivey's writing style is simply amazing! She has the ability to transport you completely into the world of her stories. I felt a deep connection with the characters instantly, which lasted the whole book through.

I had smiles, laughs, tears and total WTF? moments while reading Every Breath. The emotions I felt were real, and I loved every minute of the ride I was taken on while reading it! Any book that can drag that much emotion out of me while I read it definitely makes my moo-velous reads list!

I received an Advance Review Copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. Every Breath is due for publication on August 4, 2013
